Multi-coloured cake sprinkles, as you've never seen them before

And that's because these images were taken using a microscope, at 85x magnification. In fact, it's not just cake sprinkles that the artist Caren Alpert is interested in. On her website, she asks "What's the difference between a bird's-eye view of a remote vegetable crop and a microscopic swath from a pineapple leaf? How distinct is a pile of table salt from miles and miles of icebergs?"

A wide range of images - taking in table salt, shrimps and even Oreos - are her attempt to show us that they're not so different after all.
